History of Greek Letter Organizations at UCSC


1965 UC Santa Cruz was founded.
1989 The SOAR office was founded to support student-initiated programming from student organizations.
1990 Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded as the first Greek-Letter Organization at UC Santa Cruz.
2008 Unsustainable growth of Greek Life occurs at UC Santa Cruz. This includes GLOs being founded without a strong foundation in risk management. Additionally, two GLOs are banned from the campus.
2010 Greek Life & Student Agency. SOAR office puts a hold in allowing any new GLOs to be founded. Several student leaders in Greek Life were concerned about the safety of the community. SOAR Office worked with these student leaders to establish councils to mitigate risk.
2013 Governing Councils are formed. The Expansion Policy is created.
2014 The Reactivation Policy is created.
2016 GLO Leaders present at the University of California, Office of the President RISK Summit.
2018 GLO Leaders present to Chancellor Blumenthal, Associate Vice Chancellor of Risk & Safety Service and Dean of Students about Greek Life.

Recent Expansion History

2012 - 2013 Offered to expand Sigma Mu Delta Fraternity.
2013 - 2014 Expansion for Sigma Mu Delta Fraternity: Successful.
2014 - 2015

Offered to reactivate (re-charater) Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Re-Charting of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.: Not Sucessful due to Naitonal Headquarters evaluation of interest group.

2015 - 2016

Offered to expand Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

Offered to expand Kappa Alpha Theta.

2016 - 2017

Expansion for Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.: Successful.

Expansion for Kappa Alpha Theta: Successful.

Offered to re-charter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Re-Chartering of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.: Successful.

2017 - 2018

Offered to expand Alpha Kappa Psi Co-Ed Business Fraternity.

Offered to expand Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

2018 - 2019

Expansion for Alpha Kappa Psi Co-Ed Business Fraternity: Sucessful.

Expansion for Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.: In Progress.

2019 - 2020

Expansion was closed.

Re-Chartering of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.: Not Successful due to membership interest numbers.

2020 - 2021

Expansion was closed: COVID-19 Pandemic.

2021 - 2022

Expansion was closed: COVID-19 Pandemic.

2022 - 2023

Expansion was closed: Supporting all current recognized chapters due to COVID-19 impact.

2023 - 2024

Expansion is closed: Establishing governing councils.
